Hematology

Hematology is a branch of internal medicine dealing with the reason, physiology, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of blood diseases.

Within the scope of hematology, treatment of diseases affecting production of blood and its components such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen and coagulation mechanism is carried out. These diseases include types of blood cancers such as hemophilia, blood clots, leukemia, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Blood related laboratory works are generally conducted by a medical technology expert or medical laboratory scientist.

Hematologists dealing with this branch of medicine mainly focus on lymphatic organs and bone marrow. They diagnose blood count irregularities or platelet irregularities. Hematologists also treat organs fed by blood cells including lymph nodes, spleen, thymus and lymphoid tissue.
